Goodbye Randy Pausch (1960 - 2008)

Posted by Andrew

Back in September, I wrote about a Carnegie Mellon professor named Randy Pausch who delivered a heart-wrenching final lecuture following his terminal diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

This morning Randy passed away -- but his lecture lives on in Youtube of all places, to the tune of about 3 million views.  I urge you to set aside some time and watch as much of it as possible.

Brick Walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things.

The Brothers Artemenko

Posted by Andrew

Toy CarsSick as a dog, I set sail for Wrightsville beach this weekend for the first time since August of last year.  I needed a long weekend for a lot of reasons, and in retrospect it was the perfect move to spend it with my brothers.

This was a  special trip we'd planned in advance to see my brother Peter, who lives near the beach, along with our older brother Bill from New York City.

As soon as the familiar feeling of sand and baby toys hit the bottom of our feet, we knew the concept of "vacation" was over for us as new parents.

Here's Laura playing with C-line and Will her older cousin by about one year.

I was ready to crash after the drive, so I took a catnap before we all hopped in the boat and road it out to where the lagoon (total guess on that term, Pete) meets the ocean.  We are so pale.

Later on we grabbed the beach cruisers with William in tow so we could show him the Wrightsville Beach fire department and his first fire truck.

Maybe Will knew something we didn't -- that it was going to rain like a hurricane during our bike ride.  Oh well, he was a good sport.

Later that night I snapped a shot of Peter driving the boat with Bill riding on a surfboard (not a wakeboard).  The long exposure makes the picture a little blurry but I followed bill inside the center of the frame to keep his body in focus (a larger version of it is here on Flickr).

And here's a pic of the three brothers Artemenko in birth order.  Peter was kind enough to "simulate" a curve in our height by slouching, when in everyday life I am the shortest of the three.  This somehow always makes my brothers laugh.

After watching the guys ride the surfboard around the ocean, I tried my hand at it.  It was extremely fun and I convinced my brothers to bring the camera out so I could later produce this collage in Photoshop.

This may be the only time I'll take my shirt off for the blog, given the blinding corporate paleness of my skin.  I had to put this up though, it was the highlight of the weekend for me!

How embarrassing is that?  OK if you're done snorting your morning coffee I have just one more picture to share with you.

Here is Caroline with Ben, who was born just 3 days before her.  I took this picture of them yesterday and it looks like the brand-new cousins already get along quite nicely.

Fourth of July with Friends

Posted by Andrew

I am typing to you now having successfully avoided burning off any of my precious "computing fingers" as my neighbors call them.

For this year's fourth we walked 20 feet due west and settled in on the porch of our new friends: James and Kristen.

ZoeJ&K also have a daughter, Kallie and 3 dogs.  The dogs range from an extra large German shepherd, medium black lab and a tiny Dotson named Zoe.

Kallie played DJ for us

Then Kallie went over to dance with Caroline.  Then she played the beat of the song on Caroline's head.

Then we took Caroline and her magic bouncy seat outside to watch (more like listen) to the distant fireworks behind the silhouette of suburbia.

And here's the rest of the gang sitting around the cul-de-sac.

We even had a fireworks show of our own thanks to James and his fearless dog Tyco (the German Shepherd).  Tyco tried to eat the sparks.

Look out Tyco!

IBM PS/1You barely have to know me to get that I love the Internet.

Something clicked inside me -- or maybe was knocked loose on the football field in high school when I first fell in love with computers.

Regardless of how it happened, this unnatural courtship has coated my career, my hobbies, and now governs over many of my social connections.  Not surprisingly I've created yet another website to share, only this time with the help of friends.

It's a simple movie review blog:

FlickFool.com

The site is FlickFool.com.  Its canned design is broken up by a few hand-drawn sketches, but the real gems lay within the content: 50 word movie reviews.  No more, no less than 50 words make up the ostensibly well-written posts.

Check it out and let me know what you think.  So far we're having a lot of fun with it.
