It was time for Caroline to visit the magnificent Grandpa Peter. So we hopped in the Outback and hit I85 up to Smith Mountain Lake for the long weekend.

I snapped a lot of photos while we visited the club, grilled out with mixed drinks and appetizers -- and even put the camera down so we could help Peter move around some furniture. I also handed Peter a solid beating in ping pong.
Laura's parents' dogs are really sweet and for the most part completely ignored C-line. They did not however, miss an opportunity to jump on the couch for some petting.

And that's pretty much it. I always like visiting the Perry's because of the art they keep in the house. Here's a picture of my favorite figurine:
It always gives me a chuckle.

I'd like to formally challenge Erin and Michael of Hands On to a Spring Garden Showdown. The challenge is to see who can grow the heartiest vegetables by the end of August.
Here's a video I took this morning to show how we're trending so far in May (and my first attempt at using Flickr's new video feature).
May the greenest pair of thumbs win! And perhaps those botanically-inclined digits might blog a bit about it too.

At Laura's request, we spent mothers day shopping for summer clothes and then had dinner for five on the patio.
I donned my good husband hat and hit the outdoor mall around 10:30am. With diaper bag over shoulder and baby in tow, I watched Laura dart between Banana Republic, Anne Taylor and other clothing stores. Caroline kept me busy, and Laura seemed to enjoy a little freedom.
Later on the gang headed out to the grill for some steaks.

I had my neighbor give me some tips since I have been grilling for about 2 weeks now. I "grilled" in college. But that was tending to a modified table filled with coals that could melt steel and cook a frozen hamburger in 30 seconds.
This time I wanted to make an honest attempt at a TV quality meal. I kept the temperature between 350 and 400, cooked each filet for about 7-8 minutes on each side. Flipped them once, checked the internal temp was around 110-120 degrees and served them up! Delicious filet mignon to go with Laura's mashed potatoes.
It was around this time that the dogs had finished their bones and began lurking.

Somehow Oreo got around the fence to sit near Caroline. This is pretty normal now, and the dogs seem to tolerate Caroline exceedingly well. Caroline likes them too, even when they both tag team her face with kisses.

After dinner we hung out with our new neighbors who just moved in next door, and then took a stroll around the block to digest our mothers day meal. These are the kind of breezy, starry spring nights that are perfect for a sunset walk after dinner!

Last night, just a few days shy of her one-month birthday, Caroline not only went out to her first sushi dinner, she also decided it was time to move out of our place and into her own!
The chubster did great, sleeping like a little bear cub hibernating for winter and only waking up once for a midnight snack.
This morning, it was obvious that Caroline was a new woman. Hopefully we can keep this up for two nights in a row. We officially have a new roommate down the hall!

From time to time I like to pass along a web recommendation or useful site that I myself have found interesting.
Like a shark who needs to stay in motion to pass water over it's gills, I must surf the net for new tidbits among the tide of inane chum.
So I've been nipping at the entry pages of Mint.com for a few months now, scared to let the money management site have access to the online credentials for my finances.
This week I finally gave in and let it play with my credit card data.

Mint.com: See where your money goes. Restaurants? Shopping? Gas? Only Mint can give you the big picture in minutes, and makes personal budgeting easy.
What would typically take me a Sunday afternoon of data mining, in a matter of seconds Mint.com showed me some spending trends I could match against the national average and a few relevant offers for higher yielding accounts or lower interest rate credit cards.
I think the best feature is the alerts system. The rest is just pretty graphs that I would normally slave to create in Excel and show to my wife -- who would then panic and try to migrate us to an all grocery diet with no movie rentals. Maybe my charts were no good?
