Girly Birthday

Posted by Laura

Twenty eight years ago my mom gave birth to me today.  Well, this morning I found out that in a matter of months, I will be giving birth to my own daughter!  That’s right, Andrew and I are having a girl.  This is by far the best birthday surprise I have ever received.

We went this morning to our ultrasound appointment assuming that we were having a boy based purely on Andrew’s family history coming from a brood of three guys.  Andrew even got excited early on in the process and exclaimed, “I think I see something” and the tech accidently called it a “He.”  I was convinced that our predictions were correct, but the tech quickly corrected herself and said I know what it is if you want me to tell you and to my ears delight – she said “Girl.”

I actually broke out in a sweat and thought I might throw up when I heard the news.  We had to stop the ultrasound so that I could have some water!  Andrew is excited, although his first reaction was, “I don’t know what to do with a girl!”  When I assured him that girls play video games and like fish tanks, he seemed to calm down.

I wish we had some good shots of our little wonder, but she really wasn’t cooperating during the ultrasound and we couldn’t really get a great shot of her face.  I can tell you that so far, everything looks good.  Her growth and development are right on track, which is wonderful, and she is weighing in at 10 ounces – right where she needs to be!

I also thought that I would share a shot of my growing tummy with you.   This is me in my 19th week of pregnancy.  I’m sure we will see this shot get much bigger in the months to come!

Oddly enough it was through a work assignment that I've begun researching Podcasts.

Do you know what a Podcast is?  It's OK if you don't.

A Podcast is a snackable bit of audio/video entertainment made for on-the-go devices.  Subscribing to Podcasts is easy if you have ITunes or an IPod...  but the good news is you can avoid Apple Corporation entirely and just use the good ol' World Wide Web.

NPR Radio

Although I recommend using Itunes because it's easy.

From there, all you have to do is navigate to the Itunes Store and make your way to the Podcast section.

Inside it you will find a treasure chest of archived radio broadcasts, or more recently, made-for-podcasting content from the likes of the Wall Street Journal or New York Times.  Both are examples of excellent transitioning of content from print to the web.

The irony for me is that I don't use Podcasts on my iPod at all.  I've found a lot of enjoyment from listening to National Public Radio (NPR) on weekend mornings through my laptop speakers.
